You're My FavoriteSo, I admit it!  I have a favorite.  Hands down, no contest, no second-thought, I have a patient at work that is my absolute number one (I work at a chiropractic office).  Probably the most unlikely person to fill this position from a personality perspective, this guy and I just get along.  We aren’t interested in one similar thing, yet I find his presence in the office the most gratifying of all our patients.  And not just our active patients.  He’s my favorite amongst all the patients I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Now, lets get something straight here.  This is not to say that most of the people I come into contact with are undesirable or aggravating in the least.  Most of these folks are great people and become ever-nicer the longer we get to know them.  I’d like to think that I could chalk that up to the friendliness of our office and relationships building as a result, but I’m sure it has a lot to do with folks getting better and feeling better after any length of time under our care.  There’s just something about a hurting back that causes people to not really be themselves, if you know what I mean!

Now that we have that all figured out, the aforementioned thought above only serves to highlight just how awesome this particular patient is.  In a large group of personalities and types, most of which are plain delightful, this guy stands out to me…and I want to let you know why.   Read More→

Going Green - How Do You Do ItI was in Kroger after work yesterday picking up a few items I needed to cook a nice, romantic dinner for my wife.  Chicken and pasta with a creamy sauce, some delicious breadsticks and a few drinks filled the excessive smallness of my mini cart.  I love those little guys.  If you haven’t seen one before, they are about half the length of a standard cart and have two levels to stow away your goodies.  The shortness of the cart makes it roughly 100X more nimble and quick to move about in the grocery store. (I have no real, credible  data to back up this claim)  Not really that important or central to the story here, but I figured you might try one on your next grocery trip.

The point here is I knew that this trip to the grocery was going to be quick and painless.  A few, choice items and a timely exit.  I knew this.  That’s why I grabbed the little cart.

That’s why I should have grabbed something out of my car, too.  More specifically, three somethings.  Three trophies to my personal “go green” initiative.  My three re-usable, compactly stow-able shopping bags.

Do you have some of these?  Read More→

The 2010 Haiti EarthquakeI just finished reading and watching video regarding Pat Robertson’s reaction and comments to the great earthquake in Haiti only 2 days ago.  And I have to admit, I’m a bit puzzled at his choice of words.

If you watch this video, there seems to be nothing hateful or aggravated in his statement.  It’s curious, however, that he chooses to comment on Haiti’s “pact with the devil” during its liberation from France.  As the story goes, Haiti makes an agreement with satan that delivers them from control by France and is now cursed by this pact.  Check it out after the break!   Read More→

The Tree of LifeI was reading in Genesis the other day, taking in the Bible in a bit of a different way.  There is a new publication by Zondervan that takes the TNIV version of the Bible and lays it out in one readable story:  chronologically, in story form, omitting the places where events are repeated, delivering the story of God’s love in a seamless, readable way.  You can look at it in depth over there under the Amazon Books section. ===>  (Plug finished!)

I’ve read the story of Adam and Eve many times and heard a variety of sermons on the subject.  The delightful thing about the Bible, though, is its ability to speak to you in new ways each time it is opened.  It’s really incredible!

In the account of the fall of man, we all know and understand that the forbidden fruit was eaten against the request of God, and mankind fell into sin.  I knew all about that.  What struck me during this reading, however, was completely different.  I’m sure I’ve read and heard about the Tree of Life that was placed next to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil plenty of times, but I don’t think I ever considered it.  You see, God placed the Tree of Life in the same category as all the other trees.  They were free to eat of it.  They were free to receive life.  And God could have left it that way.  No Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, no problem…right?  Just offer life with now choice of rebellion or death.  Why not? (Genesis 2:8-9)

Unfortunately, there can’t be love when that kind of control is present.   Read More→

The Element of FearI received an email not long ago that left me shocked and petrified in a way that I haven’t experienced in some time.  It started light and easy.  A warning.  A good message:  never use text messaging while driving.

I agree 100%.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have, in the past, utilized the text feature on my phone while behind the wheel.  Guilty.  But I’ve never experienced any pain, suffering or injury.  I have veered into the shoulder area and/or crossed the sacred yellow line a few times, but never actually had an accident.  And I would say, before this email, I was about 85% on the side of being against texting while driving.  In my head, from my small swerves and questionable attention to detail, I had surmised that this was a habit worth avoiding.  At least as long as there wasn’t anything urgent or pressing, anyway.

But when push came to shove, I would pick that phone up and text away if I really needed to communicate at that moment.  (What did we do before cell phones, anyway?)

You see, the idea that I could really, really hurt myself or someone else had not become a reality for me just yet.  It hadn’t hit home.  And while I didn’t want that realization through a collision or a trip into a ditch, I knew in the back of my mind that I really shouldn’t test fate with this.

I knew it.

But I didn’t.  Not really. Not until that email.   Read More→
